Freeman Isabel and I were sadened by losing your dad. We had known him for a long time and enjoyed his company. He was an interesting man, had his eccentricities and a generous man, as you know. He had asked us to check on his former house on Hilton Head when we went down this fall, but we failed to call him when we got back. The new owner has started to build on his lot and yours. Anne Sellers told us when you first called and again when he died. Last summer I got another Princeton Alum together with Freeman for lunch and they both hit it off well. He was in banking in the former C&S and they had many mutual aqaintences.
- Isabel & Tony Chambers, Highlands, NC
Lolly and Freeman, I was so saddened to hear of your loss, but I must say that as soon as i heard, a warm smile came across my face. How could you not smile and think of your Dad?... even after all of these years. It still seems like just yesterday that the Wasden children and the Jelks children were swimming together in that indoor pool.... or burying 'goodies' in your lawn... He was a wonderful man, and I know a great Dad. Best regards to you both, and your families. Robert
- Robert Stolz, Charlotte, NC

To the family of Mr. Jelks, I was deeply saddened to learn that Mr. Jelks had passed. He was one of the sweetest people and a staple figurehead at Country Day. I think I caught his hat a hundred times or more that was a favorite past time of his--to throw his cap to you across the quad or walk way. He was even kind enough to let my friend and I interview him for our Senior project--he said our Class '93 was one of his favorites! He was a treasure to us too. I recently wrote to Mr. Jelks this summer to catch up with him. He was so nice to write back and fill me in on life. So glad I was able to reconnect with our pal Mr. Jelks. He will be missed and remembered forever. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. May the source of peace bring comfort to all who are in mourning.
- Mindy Nash, Savannah, GA

Sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Jelks. I have the best memories of him stopping by Ms. Harper's room and asking us vocabulary words--like plethora and dearth--and trying to get me to apply to Princeton! I will never forget his perpetual smile and of course, the tossing of his hat. My condolences to the family.
- Corrie Bryant-Habib, Cumming, GA

- Kevin Sheehan, Savannah, GA
Freeman and Lolly, Your dad gave of himself generously and selflessly and will be greatly missed. I will never forget the times he raced me around the Country Day track or tried to out shoot me at basketball. - Kimberly Crouch, Portland, OR
To Lolly, Free III, and family - I know you will miss your Dad so much. Some of the best memories are from Country Day...jogging on the track while your dad discussed breathing techniques, all of us riding in the back seat of the Rolls while 'the Chauffeur' drove us to the mall what a good sport, crashing his house to use the pool, & his cheerleading participation at pep rallies. During my youth...He was always everyone's biggest fan no matter how well you performed, always first to lend a hand at SCDS when called, and always prepared with a hug for those who needed one. It is impossible to measure the impact he made on each of us, but one thing I do know is that we would have had fewer smiles and a lot less laughter. Thanks Mr. Jelks, for believing in us all! Thanks Lol and Free...I know it wasn't easy sharing him with us! God Bless You during this difficult time.
- Colette Acuff Stevenson, Hilton Head Island, SC

Dear Lolly and Freeman, My deepest symapthies on your loss! I wasn't a Country Day student but he was always verykind and nice to me. As youngboy, I was challenged to make the world abetter place than it waswhen I got here. I believe your dad accomplished that.He was a great aman. You and we were truly blessed to have known him.

Freeman and Lolly, Your dad gave of himself generously and selflessly and will be greatly missed. I will never forget the times he raced me around the Country Day track or tried to out shoot me at basketball. I remember him caroling with the troubadours and attending what seemed to be every school function. What I will remember most is how he always shared an encouraging wink and a smile. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.
